Internet2 - IPv6 Router Advertisements

The IPv6 Router Advertisement Protocol is used to communicate IPv6 prefix information to devices (computers) directly attached to the router. When a device boots it turns its 48-bit MAC address into a 64-bit EUI address and looks for a 64-bit prefix coming from router. It appends the 64-bit prefix the router advertises to its 64-bit EUI-64 address, and thus now has a 128-bit IPv6 address.

IPv6 Router Advertisements are only required on interfaces that have directly attached hosts, and only if those hosts whih to auto-configure their IPv6 addresses.
