Internet2 - ISIS Interface Support

ISIS can be enables on an interface by interface on the routers. We use Level 2 (the "backbone" level) on our point to point backbone circuits and run ISIS in Passive mode on other interfaces. Passive mode doesn't try to establish an adjacency on the interface, but it does advertise the interface subnet in the routing updates. A type 3 link is a type of ISIS state called L1/L2 where he interface is in boh areas/levels. We don't use this type of state, nor do we use Level 1 states.

The metric is how much it "costs" to use the interface. The various metrics to a node are computed and the path with the lowest total value is selected as the best path, which results in packets taking that path to their destination.
