Internet2 - SNMP Counters

SNMP or the Simple Network management Protocol is a method of querying the routers for information. SNMP can be used to send configuration information to the routers, or to gather certain information from the routers. We don't use SNMP to configure the routers, but we do use SNMP extensivly to collect interface traffic counters from the routers.

SNMP uses something called community-names for authentication. It's a plain text string that must be passed to the router, along with the actual query, each time a query is sent to the router.

The following infromation is about the SNMP protocol itself; how many queries have been received and so on.
