Internet2 - ISIS Adjacencies

ISIS must form an adjacency between neighboring routers in order to pass along routing infromation. This adjacency is much like a handshake; the routers discover each initislly and then occasionaly make sure that the other router is still there. ISIS can be configured on an interface by interface basis on the routers, and typically only backbone interfaces will be configured to support ISIS, and only backbone interfaces should form an adjacency with ither backbone interfaces. ISIS can run in either Level 1 mode or Level 2 mode. L2 is the backbone mode, and L1 areas are connected to L2 areas much in the same way that other areas are connected to area 0 in OSPF. We only support and configure L2 on the backbone.
